Wellness Education
Master the ancient healing practices and modern modalities that define PALOMA. Your ability to speak knowledgeably about wellness transforms transactions into trusted relationships.
Our Wellness Philosophy
PALOMA blends ancient healing practices with modern modalities. Guests come here not just for treatments — they come to learn. Being able to speak knowledgeably about wellness concepts is part of what makes the PALOMA experience so distinctive.
Our job isn't to prescribe — it's to educate. When guests understand why a service works, they trust the recommendation and commit to ongoing care. Every conversation is an opportunity to deepen their wellness knowledge.
Your Role: Become a wellness educator. Help guests understand their body's systems, the benefits of each modality, and how to support their own healing journey.

Sound Baths: The Neuroscience of Sound
✦ Did you know? A sound bath can shift your brainwave state in under 4 minutes — moving you from active thinking into deep meditative rest faster than almost any other technique. That's not metaphor. That's neuroscience.
When guests ask "what actually happens during a sound bath," most staff say "it's relaxing." You're going to say something much more interesting — because you'll actually know.
Your brain is always operating in a brainwave state — measurable electrical patterns that reflect your level of arousal and focus. Understanding these states is how you explain why sound baths work.
| State | Frequency | You feel... | Sound bath does... |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beta | 13–30 Hz | Alert, anxious, busy-minded | Where guests arrive |
| Alpha | 8–13 Hz | Relaxed, present, calm | Reached within minutes |
| Theta | 4–8 Hz | Deep meditation, creativity, REM | Where healing happens |
| Delta | 0.5–4 Hz | Deep dreamless sleep, profound rest | Experienced by many guests |
Traditional meditation asks you to think your way into Alpha and Theta — which is hard, and takes years to do on demand. Sound baths do it for you through a phenomenon called brainwave entrainment: the brain naturally synchronizes to a dominant external frequency. The sustained, layered tones of crystal bowls create the frequency landscape your brain needs to let go.
Not all instruments create equal effects. Crystal singing bowls made from pure quartz have specific acoustic properties that make them uniquely powerful:
- Sustained overtones: A crystal bowl's tone doesn't decay quickly — it sustains and layers, creating a rich harmonic field that holds the brain in an entrained state. Strike a metal bowl and the sound fades in seconds. A quartz bowl resonates for 30–60 seconds, giving your nervous system time to lock in.
- Cymatics — sound shapes matter: When sound passes through a medium (including your body, which is 60% water), it physically organizes matter into geometric patterns. This is called cymatics. Different frequencies create different patterns. The body literally reorganizes at the cellular level in response to sustained sound.
- Quartz and the body: Quartz crystal and the silica in human bones have similar crystalline structures. Some researchers propose that quartz bowls create a sympathetic resonance with the body's own mineral structure — essentially, your bones "recognize" the sound.
- Vagal nerve activation: The rich low tones of crystal bowls stimulate the vagus nerve through the ear and chest cavity. Vagal activation is the master switch for your parasympathetic nervous system — the "rest and digest" state that calms cortisol, slows heart rate, and tells the body it's safe to heal.
The script most staff use:
"Sound baths are really relaxing. You just lie down and listen."
The script that builds trust:
"Sound baths work through brainwave entrainment — your brain naturally synchronizes to the frequencies of the bowls, shifting from active thinking into deep meditative states that can take experienced meditators years to access on their own. The sustained tones of crystal bowls also activate your vagus nerve, which is your body's direct pathway to deep relaxation. Most people hit states equivalent to deep meditation or REM sleep within the first few minutes. The 'nothing to do' part isn't a simplification — it's literally how the science works."
For group ceremonies specifically: There's a collective dimension worth mentioning. When multiple people enter coherent brainwave states simultaneously, mirror neurons and shared breath rhythms reinforce the experience. The group effect is real — it's why ceremonies feel different than solo sessions.
Infrared Sauna: The Light You Can't See
✦ Did you know? Most guests think the sweat is the point of an infrared sauna. The sweat is a side effect. What's actually happening is a cellular conversation between light and your mitochondria.
A traditional steam sauna heats the air around you until your body has no choice but to sweat. Infrared is different — it uses light wavelengths that pass through air and penetrate directly into tissue, heating from the inside out at temperatures that feel comfortable while delivering benefits that go much deeper.
Infrared light exists on the spectrum just below visible red light. Different wavelengths penetrate to different depths and produce different effects. This is why Sunlighten's mPulse saunas — which deliver all three — are so significant.
| Type | Wavelength | Penetration Depth | Primary Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Near Infrared (NIR) | 700–1,400 nm | Skin surface & upper dermis | Collagen synthesis, wound healing, skin cell regeneration, immune activation |
| Mid Infrared (MIR) | 1,400–3,000 nm | Soft tissue & muscle | Circulation, pain relief, muscle recovery, reduced inflammation |
| Far Infrared (FIR) | 3,000+ nm | Deep tissue & core | Core temperature elevation, deep detoxification, metabolic activation |
Why most saunas fall short: The majority of infrared saunas on the market only emit far infrared. You're getting one-third of the therapeutic benefit. Sunlighten's mPulse delivers all three simultaneously, which is why it's in a different category entirely.
This is the part that makes you sound like a genuine expert. When a guest asks "how does it actually work," here's what's actually happening:
- Mitochondrial activation: Near-infrared light activates cytochrome c oxidase — a protein in your mitochondria (your cells' energy factories). This increases ATP production, meaning your cells literally have more energy to repair, regenerate, and function. This is why NIR therapy is used in clinical wound healing and studied for neurological recovery.
- Nitric oxide release: Infrared heat triggers the release of nitric oxide from blood vessel walls. Nitric oxide is a powerful vasodilator — it relaxes and widens blood vessels, reducing blood pressure, increasing circulation, and delivering more oxygen to tissues. This is the same mechanism responsible for the cardiovascular benefits.
- Heat shock proteins (HSPs): When core body temperature rises, cells produce heat shock proteins. HSPs act as molecular chaperones — they find damaged, misfolded proteins in your cells and either repair or clear them. Think of HSPs as your body's quality control team, activated specifically by therapeutic heat.
- Artificial fever response: The immune system interprets elevated core temperature as a natural fever state. This activates white blood cell production and accelerates immune response — which is why regular sauna users statistically get sick less often.
We didn't choose Sunlighten because it's beautiful (though it is). We chose it because the clinical evidence is behind it.
- SoloCarbon® technology: Sunlighten's patented carbon heating panels are tested to deliver 95%+ efficient far-infrared output — meaning almost all of the energy generated becomes the therapeutic wavelength, not heat waste.
- Third-party EMF testing: EMF (electromagnetic field) emissions from heaters are a legitimate concern. Sunlighten saunas are independently tested and certified to emit near-zero EMF at body contact — a standard most competitors don't meet or test to.
- All-three-wavelength delivery: The mPulse series is programmable — different preset programs adjust which wavelengths are dominant, letting the session be optimized for detox, pain, cardiovascular, relaxation, or anti-aging.
- Clinical research: Sunlighten has published peer-reviewed studies on their specific technology, including a Mayo Clinic-referenced study on infrared sauna and blood pressure reduction. The efficacy claims are backed by data on the specific product, not infrared generically.
PALOMA's sauna includes chromotherapy — color light therapy delivered during the session. This isn't decoration. Visible light wavelengths interact with the body through photoreceptors in the eye and skin, influencing circadian rhythms, melatonin production, and even mood-regulating neurotransmitters.
- Blue light: Activates alertness and serotonin — energizing
- Red light: Stimulates circulation and cellular energy — healing
- Green light: Balancing — associated with calm and equilibrium
- Orange light: Mood-lifting, associated with joy and emotional release
- Violet light: Calming, linked to melatonin and sleep preparation
For guests who aren't sure which program to choose, ask what they're hoping to feel afterward — energized or relaxed, released or restored — and use that to recommend both the sauna preset and the chromotherapy setting.
For the wellness-curious guest:
"The difference between infrared and a regular sauna is that infrared light actually penetrates into your tissue rather than just heating the air. Your cells respond to it directly — particularly your mitochondria, which start producing more energy. It's less about the sweat and more about what's happening at the cellular level: nitric oxide release opens your blood vessels, heat shock proteins repair cellular damage, and your immune system thinks you're running a healthy fever and ramps up. The sweat is just the visible part."
For the skeptical guest:
"I understand the skepticism — most 'sauna' claims are vague. What I can tell you is that Sunlighten specifically has peer-reviewed studies, including work cited by Mayo Clinic, on blood pressure and cardiovascular benefits. The cellular mechanisms are well-documented in photobiomodulation research. This isn't spa marketing — the science is there."
The Lymphatic System: Your Body's Hidden Network
✦ Did you know? Your lymphatic system contains about 3× more fluid than your blood — and unlike your circulatory system, it has no pump. No heartbeat moving it. It relies entirely on your movement, your breath, and external stimulation to keep flowing.
Most people have never thought about their lymphatic system. That means this is your opportunity to give them a genuinely illuminating explanation — one they'll repeat to other people.
- 600–700 lymph nodes: Clustered throughout the body — densely in the neck, armpits, groin, and abdomen. These are the filtration stations of the network, where immune cells process waste and pathogens.
- Lymphatic vessels: A second circulatory network running parallel to blood vessels, lined with one-way valves that allow fluid to move in only one direction — toward the heart and lungs. They carry lymph fluid (a clear-to-pale fluid containing lymphocytes, waste proteins, dietary fats, and cellular debris).
- The thoracic duct: The body's main lymphatic drainage highway. It collects lymph from most of the body and empties it into the left subclavian vein near the heart — returning cleaned fluid back to circulation.
- The gut connection (GALT): Roughly 70–80% of your immune tissue lives in your gut, in a structure called GALT — gut-associated lymphoid tissue. This is why improving lymphatic flow often simultaneously improves digestion, immune function, and even mood. It's all connected.
Here's the explanation that makes guests say "oh, that's why I feel like that."
Without a pump, lymph moves only through: skeletal muscle contractions (movement), diaphragmatic breathing (deep breathing), intestinal peristalsis (digestive movement), and external compression. When someone sits at a desk for 8 hours, barely breathes, and doesn't move — their lymph barely moves either.
Stagnant lymph = uncleared waste sitting in tissues. That waste load manifests as: puffiness, fatigue, brain fog, weakened immunity, slower healing, skin congestion, and the emotional heaviness that people describe as "feeling stuck." It's not metaphorical. There is literally more waste in their cells than there should be.
The analogy that lands: "Imagine your kitchen sink drain slowed to a trickle. Water still drains, but everything takes longer — dishes pile up, things start to smell, the whole kitchen feels backed up. That's what stagnant lymph does to your body."
The Ballancer Pro is not a compression garment in the ordinary sense. It's a medical-grade pneumatic compression system with 24 independent chambers that inflate in an orchestrated sequence — and the sequence is everything.
- Peristaltic wave motion: The chambers inflate from the feet upward in a slow, rolling wave — precisely mimicking the peristalsis of intestinal contractions. This is the pattern the lymphatic system responds to most efficiently.
- 3:1 pressure gradient: Each new chamber inflates to a higher pressure than it deflates to, creating a gradient that physically drives fluid in one direction. This evidence-based ratio comes from clinical lymphedema research.
- Pre-programmed "clear the highway" protocol: Before the legs and hips are compressed, the abdominal and inguinal (groin) nodes are cleared first. This ensures there's "room" for the fluid being mobilized downstream — it's not just squeezing, it's orchestrated drainage.
- What manual lymphatic drainage can't replicate: A skilled therapist doing manual lymphatic drainage can approximate this — but can only address one area at a time, and fatigue affects consistency. The Ballancer Pro maintains perfect, consistent pressure over the entire lower body for the full session simultaneously.
Guests almost never say "my lymph is stagnant." They say the symptoms. Your job is to recognize them and connect the dots for the guest.
Puffy face, swollen ankles, tight rings, or that "heavy body" feeling — especially in the morning or after sitting. This is interstitial fluid not clearing properly.
Deep cellular fatigue from waste accumulation — sleep doesn't help because the problem isn't rest deficit, it's drainage deficit.
When lymph nodes are congested, they can't filter pathogens efficiently. White blood cells are there but can't respond as quickly.
Acne, rashes, under-eye puffiness, and cellulite are often symptoms of lymphatic stagnation — the skin is a secondary elimination organ, and when lymph is backed up, it shows.
Overnight, lymph pools in dependent areas. Movement normally clears it. If your lymph is already sluggish, mornings feel like wading through glue.
The glymphatic system (the brain's lymphatic network) is highly active during sleep. Disrupted lymph flow correlates with impaired glymphatic clearance — the same system now being studied in Alzheimer's research.
GALT (the gut lymphatic network) is involved in absorbing dietary fats and clearing gut waste. When it's stagnant, digestion slows and bloating increases.
The vagus nerve — which runs alongside major lymphatic vessels — is influenced by lymphatic health. Congested tissues create a signal environment that the nervous system reads as stress.
"Your lymphatic system is your body's waste removal network — it runs parallel to your circulatory system and handles everything your blood can't clear on its own. The critical difference is that your heart doesn't pump it. It depends entirely on movement and breathing. When we're sedentary, stressed, or sitting all day, the whole network slows down — and that backs up everywhere. The puffiness, the fatigue, the brain fog, even the skin breakouts — those are often the body trying to tell you the drainage isn't keeping up. The Ballancer Pro is essentially an external lymphatic pump. It moves through 24 chambers in a precise sequence that mimics what your body does naturally when it's moving freely. Many guests feel lighter, less puffy, and clearer within a single session."
Listen for these phrases in conversation and connect them to the Ballancer:
- "I feel so puffy / bloated lately"
- "I'm exhausted even when I sleep well"
- "My skin has been really congested"
- "I just feel kind of... heavy and stuck"
- "I sit at a desk all day"
Aura Photography: Beyond "Pretty Colors"
✦ Did you know? The human body produces measurable electromagnetic fields that extend several feet beyond the skin. The heart's field alone extends 3–4 feet from the body and is 5,000 times stronger than the brain's — detectable with sensitive instruments and studied extensively by the HeartMath Institute.
The aura camera doesn't see something mystical. It measures something real — and translates it into a language guests can engage with. Your job is to bridge that translation, honoring both the science and the spiritual.
Every cell in your body generates electrical activity. Neurons fire. Heart cells contract in coordinated electrical cascades. Muscles generate voltage. This isn't metaphysics — it's the same bioelectricity that EKGs and EEGs measure. The fields these processes generate extend beyond the skin surface.
- Galvanic Skin Response (GSR): The aura camera's hand sensors measure changes in the skin's electrical conductance — the same technology used in lie detectors and biofeedback therapy. GSR shifts with emotional state, stress levels, and physiological arousal in measurable, reproducible ways.
- Heart Rate Variability (HRV): Some advanced systems read subtle cardiac signals through fingertip sensors. HRV is one of the most researched indicators of nervous system health, resilience, and emotional regulation — and it's different person to person, moment to moment.
- Kirlian photography connection: Modern aura cameras evolved from Kirlian photography, discovered in 1939 by Semyon Kirlian, which photographed the corona discharge of electrical fields around living things. The contemporary biofeedback camera translates this tradition into a reproducible, interpretable format.
- The algorithm: Sensor data is processed through interpretation software that maps specific readings to color spectra based on frequency and intensity patterns. The result is a visual field that represents your energetic state at that exact moment — not permanent, not fixed, and not the same twice.
These are the baseline color associations — what a color, wherever it appears, generally indicates:
This is what separates a basic aura reading from a genuinely insightful one. Where a color appears is as significant as what color it is. Most people focus on the color; experts read the map.
| Location | What It Represents | Example Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Above the head | Higher self, consciousness, spiritual connection, where your energy is "reaching" | Purple above the head → currently in a highly intuitive, spiritually active phase |
| Left side | Incoming energy — what you're drawing in, receiving, or processing; the future, the subconscious | Green on the left → you're drawing in healing energy, likely in a receptive phase |
| Right side | Outgoing energy — what you're projecting, giving, how others experience you; the conscious, the present | Yellow on the right → you're projecting mental energy outward; others see you as sharp and analytical right now |
| Throat / neck area | Communication, expression, what wants to be spoken or withheld | Blue concentrated at the throat → very communicative energy, or something important seeking expression |
| Heart / chest area | Emotional state, love, connection, grief, what the heart is processing | Pink at the heart → open, loving, emotionally tender energy present |
| Lower body / base | Grounding, physical vitality, security, rootedness in the body and material world | Red at the base → well-grounded, physically energized, strong life force |
Note: Not all placements appear in every photo. Work with what's present, and let silence also speak — an absence of color in an area can be as meaningful as its presence.
The script that sounds like everyone else:
"Oh, you have a lot of purple! That means you're spiritual."
The script that sounds like an expert:
"The violet concentrated above your head suggests you're in a highly intuitive phase — your higher mind is very active right now, seeking meaning or insight. The yellow on your right side is interesting because that's the outward-facing side — it indicates you're projecting a lot of mental, analytical energy. Others probably experience you as very sharp and engaged lately. The green near your heart is a lovely sign; it indicates healing energy is present. Something in you is repairing or renewing."
Key principle for every reading: Honor the guest's experience with the image. The reading is an invitation to reflection, not a verdict. Ask open-ended questions: "Does that resonate? Is there anything happening in your life right now that connects to that?" The most powerful readings happen when the guest leads with their own interpretation after you provide the framework.
Always remember to mention: "This is a snapshot of right now. Come back in a few months — after a major life change, or after consistent wellness work — and compare. The shift is always the most illuminating part."
Our aura camera is genuinely rare. These systems are produced in very limited quantities, and PALOMA is one of only a handful of wellness spaces in the region — or the country — that has one. People genuinely do drive hours for this experience. That's not marketing language. It's true, and you're allowed to say it with confidence.
"One thing that makes PALOMA distinct is our aura camera — these are produced in extremely limited numbers and we're one of only a very few places in the country that has one. Guests regularly come from out of state specifically for this. It's not something you can just Google and find locally."
Knowledge Checkpoint
Before you move on, you should be able to:
- Name 5 crystals, their primary properties, and where you'd suggest placing them at home
- Explain what brainwave entrainment is and how sound baths use it
- Describe the four main brainwave states (Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta) and what each feels like
- Explain why crystal singing bowls are specifically effective — not just "they vibrate"
- Name the three infrared wavelengths (NIR, MIR, FIR) and what each one does in the body
- Explain what happens at the cellular level during an infrared session (at minimum: mitochondrial activation and nitric oxide release)
- Articulate why Sunlighten specifically is different from other infrared saunas
- Explain why the lymphatic system has no pump — and what that means for sedentary people
- Describe how the Ballancer Pro creates sequential compression and what it mimics
- Spot 4 signs of stagnant lymph from a guest's own words in conversation
- Explain the bioelectromagnetic basis of aura photography (not just "it's energy")
- Read an aura photo with attention to color placement, not just color
- Give an elevated aura interpretation script that sounds like an expert
You're the expert now. The difference between a guest having a nice experience and a guest becoming a loyal regular often comes down to this: did someone on the floor actually understand what was happening to them — and help them understand it too? That's you. These aren't spa talking points. This is real science and real wisdom, and now it's yours to share.
